Panic Attack Treatment
Panic Attack Treatment...
One of the questions I am most frequently asked is:
“What treatments are available for panic attacks, and what works best?”
In my opinion after having worked with thousands of people with panic disorder, the most effective long term treatment for panic and anxiety attacks is cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) . CBT is a treatment that teaches you how certain thinking patterns are causing your symptoms, and making you feel anxious. This therapy provides you with very powerful tools for stopping your symptoms and getting your life on a more satisfying track.
High quality research has shown that a 10-12 session therapy can work as well if not at times better than medications for panic. This approach is more like getting some coaching on anxiety management techniques than "therapy" as you might usually think of it. And it seems to work better than medications if you look at how people are doing 6 months after treatment. Panic Attack Treatment
The reason that CBT is more effective long term as a panic attack treatment is that it builds a person's confidence in their own ability to handle the anxiety. Over time the person gets to a stage where they feel they no longer have an issue with anxiety at all. In comparison with medication as a form of treatment for panic attacks, the person usually feels deep down that it is only the medication that is keep them feel secure and that were the medication to stop the symptoms would return. In this situation the person is dependent on the medication and would feel insecure if they were to go without the medication for even a short period of time.
What about taking medicine to stop the anxiety?
I would never tell someone not to try anti-anxiety medication as a panic attack treatment if that is what they think might help them. Thousands of people worldwide would simply not be able to function in their lives adequately were it not for some of the medicine that is available today to treat anxiety. The medication falls into three categories
Benzodiazepines e.g (Klonopin, Valium, Serax and Librium.)
Tricyclic antidepressants e.g (Tofranil, Sinequan, Anafranil and Effexor)
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
e.g Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil.
Medication for panic attacks can be very beneficial if, like everything else, they are not abused. There are thousands of people who would not be able to hold down a job or regain any sense of a fulfilled life were it not for the medication they have been prescribed with by their doctor. In my mind, the danger with medication occurs when the user becomes overdependent on the panic attack medication, when the very thought of forgetting to bring the medication out with you will trigger a panic attack.
